Talison is committed to pursuing sustainable development in all aspects of its operations to ensure, wherever possible, it can meet demand for its tantalum products without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.

The key components of Talison's sustainable development approach are the environment, health and safety and local communities.

 

Environment

Talison regards the environmental management and rehabilitation of its mining sites as one of its highest priorities. The Company continuously reviews and improves its environmental management system to reduce the impact of its operations both at the mine and the communities in which it operates.

Environmental Track Record

Talison has built an impressive environmental track record over recent years. Some key achievements in this area include receiving the Golden Gecko Award for Environmental Excellence (Western Australia's highest environmental award), and the attainment of accreditation to the International Standards ISO 9001:2000 Quality Management System Requirements and ISO 14001:2004 Environmental Management System Requirements.

Talison is committed to eliminating job related injuries and health concerns for its employees, by encouraging individuals to take responsibility for their own safety and accident prevention, and by identifying potential hazards in the workplace. Talison believes workplace safety should be the number one priority for the Company and every employee.

Health and Safety Track Record

Talison is proud of the success of its health and safety programme over the past three years. Key achievements in this area have included no injuries to personnel during the Category 4 Tropical Cyclone George (which resulted in extensive damage to the Wodgina area and the closure of the operation for six weeks).

Community

Talison is committed to supporting the communities in which it operates. Proactive community relations programmes ensure the impact of mining operations is minimised while offering economic and social benefits for the local community and the region. Talison supports its host communities in a variety of ways including donations to community programmes and projects, tourism, environmental activities, schools and educational programmes.

 

Community Track Record

Talison has been very active in supporting its communities with many key achievements over the past three years. These have included literacy resources being provided to the Yandeyarra Community Remote Area School adjacent to the Wodgina operation, boosting the Big Book reading program, and the continued economic progress of Yandeyarra through involvement in the development of a community business plan.

 

Energy Efficiency Opportunities Public Report

The Energy Efficiency Opportunities program run by the Commonwealth Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism encourages large energy-using businesses to improve their energy efficiency. It does this by requiring businesses to identify, evaluate and report publicly on cost effective energy saving opportunities.

Businesses participating in Energy Efficiency Opportunities are required to undertake a detailed energy assessment in order to identify opportunities to improve energy use, and to report publicly on the outcomes.

The reporting of the "annual energy usage, any new assessments and the progress of the Energy Efficiency Opportunities that have been identified" has been completed and highlighted in the reports below:
